Paramedic John Gage drove into a parking space at his local tribal clinic and nervously approached the door. He'd abandoned his breakfast and rushed through the minimal chores required before departing his ranch. He'd received an unexpected call from his great aunt in Montana . She told him that her son, one of his cousins, had been in an accident. She was anxious for Johnny to go to the clinic and check on him. Knowing the distance between Montana and California made it difficult at best, Johnny assured his aunt he would go to the clinic as soon as possible. He hadn't seen his cousin in several months, so Johnny was a bit unnerved after speaking with his aunt. He had no idea how badly his cousin had been hurt, which only served to add to his anxiety. He wasted no time; after hastily greeting the woman at the desk, Johnny asked what room his cousin was in.
The woman responded, “He is in room five. I was just heading that way myself, so I'll show you the way. Turning to a woman who had been out of Johnny 's sight she said, “I'm heading to check on Mr. Two Feathers . I'll be back shortly.”
To Johnny 's surprise the woman responded, “Yes, Doctor.”
“I'm Johnny Gage ,” Johnny informed the doctor. “ Tony is my cousin. How is he doing?”
“I'm Dr. Jacqueline Kingston , Mr. Gage . He is doing well. I think he will be able to go home tomorrow and I expect he'll have no long lasting difficulties from this accident.”
Johnny 's shoulders relaxed some, relieved that he'd be able to tell his aunt good news. He smiled at the doctor, no longer worried about his cousin. "My friends call me Johnny ," he told her. As they walked, Johnny inquired about the clinic. "I hadn't heard about your clinic until this morning, Dr. Kingston . How long has it been around? I'm a Paramedic based out of Rampart.”
“Please, call me Jackie . We've been here for three years now. We're a small clinic, primarily for the local Native American population. Many can't afford to see a doctor; in addition we've found many avoid hospitals. We provide doctors for all kinds of situations, including physicals and urgent care situations. We have twenty inpatient beds for more serious situations, but no Intensive Care Unit at this time. In addition, all physicians and nurses are at least part Indian and speak at least one native language.” The doctor added a few more facts as they continued toward Tony 's room.
"That's impressive, Jackie ." Johnny thought a moment as they walked the hall together, and an idea popped into his mind. "Tell me, do you have volunteers in addition to your regular staff? My shifts are usually 24 hours on, 48 off, but this sounds like something I'd be interested in helping with.”
“That would be great Johnny , and yes, we do need volunteers.” Jackie 's dark chocolate eyes flashed in excitement. “We're at your cousin's room now, but stop by and see me before you leave and I'll give you some more information as well as some forms to fill out.”
Jackie led Johnny into his cousin's room and checked his status then answered some of his questions. Johnny was impressed by her manner and more than a little intrigued by this petite young doctor. After visiting with his cousin for awhile, Johnny left and stopped by the desk as Jackie suggested. She told him more about the clinic and then gave him the forms she had mentioned.
As Johnny headed home, he considered all he had learned that day. He knew, sadly, that there were no federal Indian hospitals in California because in the 1950s, the government had tried to shift the responsibility to the state. [i]
He found himself thinking about Jackie , too. She had strength about her that he really liked. In some ways she reminded him of a younger version of Dixie .
‘ Boy, I'd like to ask her out, but how could I approach her? Man, she's a doctor; would she even want to go out with a fireman? ' He grimaced as he considered the situation. ‘ But we do have a lot in common. She did seem very friendly toward me. Maybe I should wait; try to get to know her a little. Yeah, this will require some thought, and some time. I'm gonna have to time it right to ask her - if I do. ' He smiled to himself as he eagerly anticipated not only the volunteer work, but also the opportunity to get to know this intriguing, and beautiful, doctor.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
The next day Johnny made a special trip into Rampart, taking the newly filled out forms with him. Heading into the Emergency Room he greeted Dixie .
“Hi Dix ! How are you this beautiful day?”
“I'm doing well, thanks, Johnny . What are you doing here today…I hope nothing is wrong?”
“Nope, Dixie everything is great. “Is Ke… err Dr. Brackett around?”
Knowing of Kel's and Johnny 's friendship, Dixie ignored Johnny 's slip of the tongue and smiled at his embarrassment. She responded, “Yes, he sure is. Things have been slow today so he's in his office. I'll call him for you.”
Dixie picked up the phone and informed Kel that Johnny was here to speak with him. Hanging up she informed Johnny , “He said for you to come on in.”
“Thanks Dix !” Johnny exclaimed with a smile as he headed toward Kelly Brackett 's office.
The door opened as Johnny approached. “This is a surprise, Johnny . Let me guess, you just can't get enough of us on your workdays,” Dr. Brackett said with a laugh. “Come on in.”
Sitting down, Johnny told Dr. Brackett about the encounter at the clinic and his interest in volunteering. “Did you know that Indian women are less likely to get prenatal care? They also have more complications during pregnancy and delivery because of economic, behavioral and social risk factors,” Johnny informed the handsome doctor. [ii] “I'm excited because I think I've found a place I can help my people without going back to the res.”
“That sounds wonderful, Johnny . I'm guessing there *is* something I can do to help you?”
“Yes, there sure is. Would you mind filling out this reference for me?” Grinning, Johnny handed the forms to Dr. Brackett .
“Sure, Johnny , not a problem.”
“Thanks, Kel. I appreciate it,” Johnny stated. “I guess I'd better get home. I'm in the middle of repairing some boards in my corral.”
Dr. Brackett grimaced. "Yeah, I know what you mean. I've got a woodworking project of my own that I need to get done, if I ever find the time."
"Oh yeah…what project is that?"
"Ah, I've got some bookshelves I've got to get up. I've been avoiding it, since I'm not particularly handy. It'll probably take me half a day to get it done."
"Hey, I'd be glad to help if you want. Just say the word, and I'll bring my tools over."
Dr. Brackett 's face lit up. "Really… Johnny , that'd be great! Hey, I'll even buy you dinner in exchange for your help."
Johnny 's face brightened, always eager for a free meal. "Sounds like a deal to me. Just let me know when."
After promising to be in touch about a time, Kelly Brackett sat lost in thought, thinking about the friendship he and Johnny had developed in the past year after they'd both been sick with the monkey virus. Somehow the shared experience of nearly dying from the same virus had created an unexpected and unlikely bond between the two men. At the time, Kelly Brackett had nonchalantly, and in an almost joking way suggested that they get together for a steak dinner to celebrate after their release from the hospital, but Johnny had been the one to take the bull by the horns and invited him over for an evening during their convalescence. After that first dinner at Johnny 's, they had spent more and more days off together, discovering they had more in common than they'd previously thought. Like he and Roy , their personalities were quite different, which seemed to add to the interest and complexity to their relationship. Kel had been surprised to discover that Johnny Gage was a much deeper person than he'd ever let on in his day to day encounters with him on the job, and had been even more surprised to discover that Johnny's carefree attitude was like a breath of fresh air. He shook his head to himself as he pondered the fact that the two of them were becoming quite close friends.
He never would have thought it possible. It hadn't originally been this way. When the paramedic program first started, the doctor and paramedic had been at best wary of each other, and at worst, at each others' throats. Kel remembered the uncomfortable confrontation during Johnny's birthday party, hosted by Dixie, in which Johnny had made a point of rubbing in the fact that the paramedic program was gaining ground. At the time, he'd felt Johnny 's flippant comments had been rude; to say the least, and Gage had only left a bad taste in his mouth. He had ended up leaving the party, which was clearly in support of the paramedic program he did not support. It was only after Roy and Johnny saved Dixie 's life on a rescue that Kel began to change his mind. His opinion of Johnny Gage had changed along with his attitude about the paramedic program, and slowly, over time, he came to realize that not only was Johnny an outstanding paramedic, but also, a pretty nice person. A wan smile spread across his face as he came to the conclusion that his first impression of the man had been inaccurate.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
A few days later, Johnny was back at the clinic. Johnny had already returned his paperwork and now was here for his first day of volunteering. Walking in, he found things to be much busier than the first two times he'd been there. Several days of the week the clinic had times for walk-ins to see a doctor as well as to have routine medical needs tended.
Many women and children, along with some men, lined the walls of the clinic, taking up every available seat. Johnny could see signs of blatant poverty. Much of the clothing the people wore was threadbare and many children were without shoes. Even the tiniest tots sat quietly, making very little noise. Johnny was struck by the silence in spite of the obvious busyness.
‘ Compared to a full waiting room at Rampart this place is like a tomb. '
The head nurse, knowing who Johnny was, quickly assigned him where they needed help. Several hours later the clinic was empty and Johnny felt very good about what he had accomplished.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Late that afternoon Johnny went over to Kel's as planned to put the bookshelves up. Johnny had volunteered to 'help' him, but in reality, he would more likely be assisting Johnny – barely. He was a wonder with a scalpel and other medical equipment, but sadly inept with a hammer and screwdriver.
Arriving at Kel's, Johnny greeted him then flippantly asked, “So, Doc, are you going to be doing any hammering today?”
Kel made a face and said, “Do you want to do any doctoring tonight?”
Johnny snickered, and nodded knowingly. He'd seen the good doctor's attempts with a hammer in the past. “Well I guess maybe I'd better do the hammering then. I really don't want to face Dixie when you can't operate because of a smashed thumb.”
Johnny laughed at the scowl he received. Kel tried to keep a straight face but failed, finally joining into the laughter.
The handy paramedic made short work of the job and soon the two friends were sitting on the doctor's deck. The back deck was a feature Kelly Brackett had immediately focused on after he moved into the house. He had hired a contractor to put in a stone patio, complete with a built in barbecue and hot tub. He'd spared no expense, equipping it with cushioned, wrought iron furniture that included an umbrella table with chairs and two very comfortable chase lounges. Sitting down at the patio table they feasted on the ribs, beans and coleslaw Kel had ordered.
“This is really good! I haven't had ribs for a long time,” Johnny commented.
“I've been to this place a few times and I've liked it. Plus they deliver.”
They continued eating, enjoying the food and company. Pushing back his plate, Johnny told Kel about his day.
“I volunteered at the tribal clinic for the first time today. For awhile it was as busy as Rampart. The clinic is available for walk-ins a couple times a week. Many people have no other doctor, so the clinic times are very busy.”
Johnny continued telling Kel about the clinic, answering the many questions the doctor had.
“I'm really glad you've had this opportunity, Johnny . I can see how important it's been to you.
“It is,” Johnny responded with conviction.
Changing the subject, Johnny said, “I'm getting a new horse next week. I had an offer to get an appaloosa filly; she's almost two years old. Her bloodlines should go really well with Star Bright, in a few years that is. It's taken me awhile to save up for another horse. I was very lucky to come across Poka and Star Bright when their owner was moving and couldn't take them.
“That's great, Johnny , you're starting to fulfill your dream of raising horses. Sometimes I think I'd like to get a ranch. Maybe something a little smaller than yours though. I really only want the space to keep a horse or two; I've got fond memories of going riding every summer growing up.”
“You should, Kel.”
"Well, I'm not sure I'd be able to devote the time to it right now...maybe someday."
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Johnny continued volunteering at the clinic. He frequently found himself working with Jackie , much to his pleasure. He found her intriguing, unlike any woman he had ever known. He wanted to get to know her, but was slightly intimidated by the fact that she was a medical doctor. It was something he consciously didn't even admit to himself, but in the back of his mind, it made him feel a wee bit insecure. How could he measure up to the caliber of a doctor? He couldn't imagine spending the time and money needed to become one. In addition, he wasn't sure he would feel comfortable being in a relationship with someone who made substantially more money than he did, not to mention constantly comparing himself to someone who held such a distinguished career. He knew, even though he felt his profession was well respected, that working for the county would never result in a good paying job. Yet, on the other hand, he realized that this line of thinking was very old fashioned.
Several weeks after he had started volunteering, following a busy morning, Johnny ran into Jackie .
“Hi Johnny …are you finished with your work for the day?”
“Yep, I'm finished. I was just about to head out.”
“If you don't have anything important planned for a bit I'd love some company. I was headed over to the café across the street to get some lunch.”
“Sure, Jackie …I'd love to join you,” Johnny responded, managing to keep the surprise out of his voice.
They headed across the street to the café and sat down at a table. The waitress handed them both menus. As she looked at the menu, Jackie asked, "How is your cousin doing, Johnny ?"
"He's doing really well, thanks. As you predicted, he's fully recovered."
After they placed their order, Johnny asked, “So, where are you from, Jackie ?”
“I'm originally from Nebraska but we moved to Wyoming when I was 6. I grew up on the reservation there. Most of the people were poor and the medical care was nearly non-existent. When I was 10 many of my friends died from influenza. That was when I knew I wanted to be a doctor. I wanted to be able to stop something like that from happening again. I managed to get a scholarship, went to college and med school, and then went back home and interned. The hospital I worked at ended up closing just after I finished interning. Luckily I heard about the plans to begin this clinic, and I jumped at the opportunity. I'm glad I did; it has been an incredible experience. It's very hard, but very rewarding.”
“Your story sounds sadly familiar. I'm from Montana , raised on a ranch near a reservation. I saw many of the same types of things. Accidents were the worst. The local hospital wouldn't take Indians, even though it was much closer than the res clinic. I knew people that died because of the extra transport time. I had a similar experience here, when I was a rescue man. That was what spurred me to investigate the paramedic program.”
“Wow, you're right, that does sound sadly familiar.”
Jackie looked at her watch, realizing what time it was and said, “Yikes, I'd better go. Johnny, I'd love to hear more, but I'm due back in about two minutes.”
Deciding to take the chance, Johnny said, “That's okay; you'd better go. And thanks, Jackie . I enjoyed our lunch. Maybe we could do something like this again soon?”
“I'd like that, Johnny . I'll see you next time.”
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
That evening Johnny was in the barn doing chores. His cat, General Beauregard , a Norwegian Forest Cat nicknamed Bo , was being his normal self, begging for attention. Johnny stopped his chores and sat down on a hay bale to pet Bo . As he stroked the cat he thought about his lunch with Jackie .
“You know, Bo , that woman intrigues me. She is so…so different from all of the women I've dated. She is a tiny thing but she seems so strong, yet she has an aura about her that gives me the impression I'd never want to cross her. What do you think, Bo ? Ya think a beautiful doctor could be interested in a paramedic?" The cat's eyes narrowed as he continued to scratch behind his ears, then the cat began purring more deeply. "Hmm…you think maybe I should just try to be friends with her first?" Bo opened his eyes a bit and looked up at Johnny . Johnny looked into the cat's eyes, as if he were trying to find the answer in the feline's expression. "Yeah, maybe I better not push it at first. Besides, once she finds out what a charming and fun guy I can be, I won't be able to fight her off." Bo's eyes opened wider, and Johnny grinned at the cat, giving him one last swipe of the hand down his fur.
Johnny stood up and resumed his chores, feeding the horses, cleaning out a stall for the new filly and working on general cleaning, and then headed inside to do a few chores before climbing into bed.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Jackie was having a difficult morning. Once again the clinic was incredibly busy with many of the people seeking the free medical care offered. Jackie had treated a woman that really needed to be in the hospital but they had been unable to convince her husband that she needed to stay. She had five small children, all under the age of six, and was pregnant again. She was six months along and Jackie believed the child she was carrying was too small. No amount of persuasion could convince the husband to give up his, in Jackie 's opinion, unpaid servant. Jackie shook her head sadly as she watched them leave. She feared for the life of not only the child, but also the mother.
Thankfully, the woman was her last patient of the morning. She hung up her lab coat and grabbed her jacket and purse, ready to leave. As she walked out she came across Johnny , also ready to leave.
“Hey Johnny ,” she greeted him wearily.
Johnny observed the tired manner she displayed. He didn't recall ever seeing Jackie this weary. He replied, “How would you like to blow this joint and join me for lunch?”
“That sounds exquisite, Johnny . Let's go!”
They headed out, going to the same café they had gone to several times. By now, they were becoming good friends.
As they sat eating lunch, Johnny excitedly told Jackie about the new filly he had gotten the previous week. He'd already told Jackie a little bit about his ranch in their previous conversations, so she was not surprised to hear about a new horse.
Jackie sighed and said, “She sounds beautiful, Johnny . Like you, I grew up with horses. I haven't had the chance to be around them in many years though. I live in an apartment out back of the clinic so I can't keep a horse. I miss riding…for that matter I miss simply being around horses. There is nothing like the smell of horses.”
“I know what you mean, Jackie . You know, you should come out to my ranch one of these days. We could go riding. I'll even pack a picnic for us.”
Jackie 's chocolate eyes lit up at the prospect and she said, “Really?! That sounds wonderful!”
“Yes, really.” Johnny grinned in pleasure at her positive response. “I have a nice little mare you'll love. Her name is Pocahontas . The woman I got her from named her after the Indian Princess Pocahontas . I call her Poka though. My other horse, Star Bright, is a stallion I got from the same woman. I can't say I would have named either of them those names if I'd named them. Oh well, the new filly doesn't have a name so I can name her.”
“When would you like me to come over?”
“Let's see,” Johnny thought. “I work tomorrow, and then I'm going fishing with a couple of guys from work the following day. We work again the next day. How does this sound…I'll pick you up the morning after my second shift from now?”
“That sounds good. I'd better get back to work now. I'll see you then.”
Jackie left with a smile. The morning may have been long and stressful but she had something wonderful to look forward to now.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
After the fishing trip, Johnny called Jackie from work to confirm that he would pick her up there about 8:30 a.m. the next morning.
“How was your trip, Johnny ?” she asked.
“It was eventful. On our way back we ended up rescuing some people that had been in an auto accident. They were hurt pretty badly but luckily we were able to get them to a small country clinic that was able to help them.”
"Oh, wow! I'm glad you were there!"
“Yeah, so am I. Well, I guess I'd better get started on breakfast. It's my day to cook and the guys aren't too patient about waiting.”
Jackie laughed, and then said, “I'll see you tomorrow!”
Johnny said good-bye and hung up the phone in the dorm, then headed into the kitchen to start breakfast. On his arrival in the kitchen, he found the rest of the crew in a lively discussion about the exciting events of their fishing trip and joined into the conversation prior to fixing breakfast.
Just as he was about to start cooking, the tones went off, sending the station on a rescue of a car over a cliff on Bear Mountain . They finally got to the auto accident victims after a tractor cleared a path down through heavy brush, and extricated them. After they carried them up the hill, Roy left with the victims in a chopper while Johnny remained to drive the squad in.
Realizing that he had left the HT down the mountain, Johnny said, “Hey Cap…I left the handi talkie down below. I'm going to go get it, okay?” He then headed down to the accident scene. As Johnny approached the car he saw Hector, the tractor driver, on his tractor nearby, getting ready to head up. He asked him, “Hector, have you seen a handi talkie around here?” At Hector's negative response, he continued to the car and looked in the front seat. Not seeing it there, he then moved to the back. Spotting the HT on the back seat, he had just retrieved it when he felt a sharp pain strike his calf and let out a yelp.
‘ Youch! ' He jerked his leg away and looking down, his eyes widened in disbelief as he saw a large rattlesnake slithering away. His heart began pounding as he hopped away from the snake, totally caught off guard, with what seemed like a million thoughts flashing through his mind.
‘ Oh boy have I got myself into trouble now. What first…tourniquet…need to get a tourniquet on…gotta call Cap...deep breath Gage, stay calm. '
Johnny immediately called out to Hector, “Oh, man, I've been bit by a rattler.”
Johnny began pulling up his pant leg as Hector hurried over to him. In a tone much calmer than he felt, he stated, “Get me a tourniquet, a branch, something limber enough to use as a tourniquet.” Hector ran off to comply.
Up above, the men were startled when they heard John 's voice crackle over the HT. “Engine 51, this is John . Uh…I've been bit by a rattlesnake.”
Johnny heard Cap's quick reassurance. “John, hang on pal, helps on its way.”
Putting down the HT, Johnny silently cursed to himself as he pulled out his pocketknife and cut two short incisions in his leg to let the poisoned blood flow from the wound. Shakily, he fastened the makeshift tourniquet on his leg, then stood as Hector helped him toward the tractor.
Seeing Chet and Marco tearing down the hill toward him, Johnny thought, ‘They look as scared as I feel about now.'
The two firemen assisted Johnny onto the tractor, and just as he was settled in the passenger seat, dispatch called, saying, “Squad 51, we have Rampart on the land line. They're requesting vital signs.”
Beginning to feel slightly dizzy, Johnny slowly lifted the HT to his mouth. “All right, Rampart, as soon as we get out of here.” Leaning back in the seat, a wave of panic threatened his calm. ‘Man, John , gotta keep your head. You know how to treat a snakebite. You can do this.'
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Dixie had summoned Dr. Brackett immediately and called the county fire dispatcher to set up a link with them when she heard Cap's call saying a paramedic had been bitten by a rattlesnake.
Entering the base station area, Kelly Brackett asked Dixie , “Any word on the seriousness of the bite?” Seeing Dixie shake her head, he continued, worry evident in his voice. “I don't like it. If it's grade four Johnny could be dead within minutes.”
The doctor felt completely helpless. If only Johnny were here, he could treat him now. He knew Roy had come in on a helicopter so he knew they weren't close by. He also knew the helicopter had been sent back out to a different rescue and wasn't available.
Kel already knew it wasn't easy to have friends as patients but the knowledge didn't help much when it actually happened.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Once back at the engine, the crew got Johnny up on the hose bed and brought him the needed supplies. Getting on the HT, Johnny radioed, saying, “LA, this is Squad 51. Can you notify rampart and please set up for a relay for vital signs.”
As dispatch acknowledged Johnny 's request, Johnny took his own vitals then called out for Marco to set up an IV. Picking up the HT again, his voice showing the stress of what he was feeling just a bit, Johnny advised, “LA, Squad 51…vital signs are, Pulse 95, respirations 18, BP is 120 over 65.” After receiving Rampart's authorization for the IV, Johnny continued to instruct the crew what to do, then managed to start the IV on himself. Finished adjusting the IV, he said, “Ok, Cap…let's get me out of here.” He finished speaking, and then lay back on the hoses. He was no longer feeling only the throb of the bite, now his whole leg throbbed. His mind gave way to thoughts he had temporarily kept at bay.
‘ I'm already feeling dizzy…hope I can keep it together ‘til we get to Rampart. I wish Roy was here, he would take care of me if I pass out. Can't let myself get sleepy…stay awake…can do it. '
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Kelly Bracket grimaced when he heard engine 51's ETA was still 30 minutes. He hadn't liked hearing the breathless tone in Johnny 's voice as he relayed his vital signs. After asking for an update, Kel heard Johnny say, “LA this is Engine 51…patient is experiencing numbness around the mouth and….”
Dispatch quickly radioed the engine back, saying, “Engine 51, you're breaking up. Engine 51, you're breaking up and unreadable. Repeat.”
Captain Stanley stole a worried look backward at his rapidly deteriorating paramedic, and seeing that he wasn't capable of repeating, quickly took over, saying, “LA, Engine 51 repeating. Patient is experiencing numbness around the mouth, also drowsiness.”
Looking over at Dixie , the doctor said, “The venom is taking effect awfully fast. Some of it must have gotten in a vein. Time's the key factor now.”
As Kel finished speaking, he looked over at Roy and saw the frightened look on his face and thought, ‘ I wish Roy hadn't just heard me. He looks like he is barely holding it together…I can hardly blame him though… Johnny is family to him. '
Reverting his concentration back to the situation, Kel heard Dixie say, “Three's all setup.”
It seemed like an eternity to the three waiting at Rampart for further updates. Captain Stanley advised, “LA advise Rampart our ETA is now 15 minutes,” which only brought attention to the fact that it had only been 15 minutes.
Kel turned to Dixie, touched her on the arm and said, “Get the orderlies and a gurney out to receiving. I'll be in three.” He immediately headed into the treatment room with Roy in tow. Seeing the distress on Roy 's face, instead of focusing on the negative, Kel reassured Roy , saying, “ Johnny will be here soon, Roy . He's strong and in excellent shape. You know we'll do everything we can. Let's try to stay positive, for Johnny 's sake.”
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Engine 51 arrived and Johnny was quickly lifted down off the engine and brought into the treatment room. Kel immediately began his exam and then instructed the nurse, saying, “Carol, I'm ready for the skin test.”
Chet had been unable to pull himself away from Johnny's side, his worry evident on his face. Hearing Dr. Brackett 's instruction to Carol , he spoke up and said, “What's that for?”
The doctor quickly explained, “We've got to be sure he's not sensitive to the anti venom or it could kill him. If he's going to react it will be in the next 20 minutes.”
Roy 's jaw dropped and for a moment he stared at Dr. Brackett . He softly repeated, “Twenty Minutes.” His face showed the fear he felt, truly afraid his partner wasn't going to make it this time.
A long 20 minutes passed. Dixie had convinced Roy to leave the room for a few minutes but Chet remained, keeping a silent vigil over his pigeon. Roy and Dixie had both returned when Kel checked the skin test and pronounced, “No reaction. Carol start the anti venom IV, 10 vials to start with.”
Chet quickly spoke up, voicing what they all were wondering. He said, “That mean he's gonna be alright?”
Dr. Brackett answered, “I'd say he has an excellent chance right now.”
Roy and Chet both left after Dr. Brackett assured them that Johnny's chances were excellent, but the doctor remained, watching over his patient, his friend. The nurses had gotten Johnny into a hospital gown and cleaned him up. Kel felt relief flow through him as he saw the slow improvement in Johnny 's condition. Shortly, he noticed Johnny starting to come around.
“Welcome back, Johnny ,” Kel greeted. “You got here in time; you're going to be just fine. There were a few very worried firemen here for awhile, though.” ‘Not to mention one very worried doctor friend.'
His mouth very dry, Johnny managed only a slight croak as he looked around the room, orienting himself to his surroundings. He fought the nausea that threatened to announce itself. ‘No, I'm not going to be sick. Don't want that, I'm miserable enough. Oh man, my leg feels like it's on fire and my head feels like I'm at a Rolling Stones concert.'
Brackett explained where Johnny 's friends were before he had the chance to ask. “They had to go back to the station. Once they knew you were going to be fine they left. They said to tell you they would see you in the morning, after they got off shift.”
Johnny heard Kel's words. He fought a wave of sleepiness, and managed to give his friend a look of thankfulness. As he drifted off, he managed to say, “Okay, thanks Kel.”
Kelly Brackett's face twitched characteristically as he looked down at his patient, and friend, cognizant of the fact that he knew Johnny was in for an uncomfortable next couple of hours. Snakebites were painful, and the recovery often involved bouts with severe nausea and headache. It felt almost foreign to him, after years of stoically practicing medicine without becoming emotionally involved with the patient, but for once the doctor allowed the more emotional side of his personality to come through as he offered Johnny a reassuring smile, accompanied by a quick squeeze to the shoulder.
As the orderlies entered the room, Dr. Brackett left, saying, “He's ready for transport to his room. Take good care of him.”
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
The next morning Johnny was feeling much better. Roy and Chet came to visit him, Chet trying to emphasize he hadn't been concerned for Johnny . While they were there, the nurse they had met at the rescue on their fishing trip, Mrs. Peterson , came in, bringing Johnny some of her homemade cookies.
After all of his company left, Johnny suddenly realized that he was supposed to have picked Jackie up to go riding that morning. It was now noon and he grimaced, knowing he was to have met her at 8:30 a.m.
‘Oh no! She's gonna think I blew her off! Oh, man! My first real opportunity with her and I blow it! Man, I hope she understands.'
Deciding to take the chance, he picked up the phone and called, hoping perhaps she would have gone into the clinic to work when he didn't show up. He didn't remember her home number and really didn't want to ask someone to call her for him.
He dialed the phone and the call was put through to Jackie 's office. When she answered, he said, “ Jackie , this is Johnny . I'm so sorry I didn't call you before now. I know it sounds cheesy but I have a really good excuse.”
“It's okay, Johnny . I know you are not the type to just blow me off,” Jackie assured him, sensing the seriousness in his voice. She suddenly tensed in concern, wondering what had happened.
Sighing in relief, Johnny explained, “I'm at Rampart.”
“Why do I get the feeling you don't mean as a paramedic?”
“Uh…yeah, um…I kinda got bitten by a rattlesnake yesterday on a rescue. I was out of it until this morning and I didn't think about what time it was until now.”
“You're right, Johnny . It *is* cheesy,” she joked back at him, sensing the need to lighten up his mood. Then, turning serious, she added, “I'm *very* glad to hear you're okay. I really didn't think you were the kind of man to just not show up without a word. I'll admit I was worried. What room are you in? I'd like to come visit you tonight.”
Relief evident in his voice, Johnny thanked her for understanding and gave her his room number.
‘ Wow, she is incredible. She really understands .'
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Several hours later, walking into Rampart through the emergency room, Jackie stopped at the nurses' station to ask directions to Johnny 's room.
“May I help you?” she was asked when she stopped at the desk.
Jackie replied, “Yes, could you please tell me how to get to room number 205?”
Dixie looked at the petite woman curiously then gave her directions. Letting the curiosity get the best of her, she said, "Oh, you must be a friend of Johnny 's. I'm Dixie McCall. I'm the....."
“….Head nurse in Emergency. Johnny 's talked about you. He thinks you're pretty special.”
A smile formed on Dixie 's face and she blushed slightly at the unexpected praise.
“Actually, I'm coming to check on my wayward volunteer. I'm Dr. Jacqueline Kingston . Johnny volunteers at the tribal clinic where I work. He stood me up so I'm here to give him a hard time about it.” Smiling, Jackie softened her words, letting Dixie know she intended no ill will towards the paramedic.
“Oh, hello Dr. Kingston , it's nice to meet you. Johnny has mentioned you. I know he really likes the work at the clinic.”
‘ He just didn't mention you were young, pretty or a woman. ' Dixie thought.
“It's nice to meet you, too. Thanks for the directions…I'd better go up to see him before I have to head home.”
Saying goodbye, Jackie took the elevator up and then walked down the hall toward Johnny 's room. Knocking softly on the door, she pushed it open as he bid her to enter.
“I don't know if I think this is an acceptable excuse to stand me up, Johnny .”
Giving her sad puppy dog eyes, Johnny said, “I would have much rather been with you, Jackie .”
She laughed, and then said, “So, do you have any ideas of how to make this up to me? It had better be good.”
“Let me think…a day of riding with a picnic…followed by a nice dinner. How does that sound?”
“I think that would be very enjoyable, Johnny .”
“It's a date then…just as soon as we can figure out a time that works for both of us.”
“Good.”
“I told you about the rescue that Roy , Chet and I did on our fishing trip, but did I tell you about the nurse, Mrs. Peterson ?”
Jackie looked at Johnny with interest, and said, “No, you didn't.”
“She was something. When we took the patients into the clinic the doctor wasn't there. She was really thrown for a loop, not knowing what to do. After we explained what was happening she turned out to be the best help. She pretty much did everything at that clinic…receptionist, switch board operator, and scrub nurse all rolled into one. Plus she is a terrific baker; she came into town to visit her sister today and brought me these cookies.”
Johnny picked up the cookies and offered one to Jackie .
“She sounds wonderful, Johnny .” Jackie 's smile had faded from her face.
Johnny looked at Jackie , wondering if he detected a slight note of jealousy in her voice. Unsure, he decided to add, “Wonderful old lady, Mrs. Peterson . She reminds me of my grandmother.”
Relieved, Jackie stated, "Oh. Really…so how exactly did this happen, anyway?” Jackie indicated Johnny 's leg as she spoke.
“We were on a rescue up on the mountain; some kids had been out joyriding and drove off a cliff. We had to use a tractor to clear the way down to where they crashed. We rescued them, got them up and on the helicopter with Roy accompanying them. We were all getting ready to leave and I realized I'd forgotten the HT down by the kids' car. I'd just found it when the snake got me. Called Cap, he sent Chet and Marco down, and then we rode the tractor up the hill. They got me up on the back of the engine where I got the great honor of sticking myself with an IV. I don't remember much else until I woke up with Ke - , er, Dr. Brackett , standing over me telling me I was going to be fine.”
Jackie quipped, “I'm certainly glad you had what you needed to treat yourself. I'd hate to have to break in a new volunteer.”
“You're a real comedian Doc…don't give up your day job.”
“Well, speaking of day jobs I'd better get going. I have things to do before I go to bed tonight. Morning will be here all too soon.” Jackie stood up to leave, giving Johnny 's hand an affectionate squeeze. Turning serious, she added, “I *am* very glad you *are* okay, Johnny . You're becoming a good friend and I think you're pretty special.”
Johnny blushed at Jackie 's words. “Thanks for coming to see me, Jackie . See you soon.”
“Call me when you get out of here. Good night, Johnny .”
Jackie headed off, thinking what a special man Johnny was. She was secretly relieved that Mrs. Peterson was an older lady but she wasn't about it admit it to anyone.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Half an hour later, Johnny was just starting to drift off to sleep. He knew his sleep would be interrupted momentarily by the night nurse coming to check his vitals but he just couldn't keep his eyes open. Sensing a presence, he sleepily looked up and was surprised to see Dixie instead of the night nurse.
“Have you been demoted, Dix ?”
“Yep…I've been reassigned to checking on wayward paramedics.”
“Ha ha Dix . Think you're a comedian now, do ya?”
Picking up the BP cup, Dixie began to take Johnny 's vitals. As she did, she commented, “You're feeling better. I see you had quite the stream of visitors today.”
Johnny glanced up at her. ‘ Dixie 's fishing for information. ' Smiling, he said, “A few. I can't complain.”
Giving him a mock glare, Dixie got to the point. She chided, "Are you....keeping your lovely new lady friend that you're volunteering for a secret, Mr. Gage ?"
“ Jackie ? There's nothing to tell, Dix . We're just friends.”
“Really…well she is a good ‘friend' to come check on you then.” Dixie didn't miss the fact that Johnny didn't look entirely truthful, and his eyes had focused downward upon his answer.
“Ah, Dixie …really, there is nothing to it." He shrugged, hesitant to say more, but suddenly craved Dixie 's opinion. In an effort to do his own little fishing expedition, he commented nonchalantly, "I don't think anything could be anyway. She's a doctor, I'm just a paramedic.”
After marking Johnny 's vitals on his chart, Dixie looked at it for a moment, and then placed it back on the end of the bed, preparing to leave. As she left, she stated, “Okay, if you say so. I'd better get home since I have to be back here first thing in the morning. Just think about this, though, Johnny . Does the fact that you're *only* a paramedic bother her or does it bother *only* you? 'Night, sleep well.”
With that, Dixie left, leaving Johnny with a lot of soul searching to do.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
A week later, now fully recovered, Johnny drove to the clinic to pick Jackie up. He was anxious to show her his ranch. As Johnny approached the backdoor of the clinic his jaw dropped at the sight before him.
Jackie stood casually leaning against the porch rail. She wore a dark lavender western blouse and blue jeans. On her feet were western boots that, although they were clearly made to ride in, somehow managed to make her little feet look cute. She wore a deep purple bandana, tied in a knot, around her neck. The pretty doctor's ebony hair shimmered in the morning sun. Her head was topped by a Stetson hat that matched the color of her boots and her hair was neatly braided down her back. Although he'd seen women dressed like this before, something was different about Jackie . For some reason Johnny thought she looked different; a tuck here, a twist there, Jackie had a special pizzazz about her that struck Johnny as far different from any woman he'd dated. Her face, nearly makeup free, bore only mascara and a light chap stick that made her full lips look even pinker. She smelled of laundry detergent and sunscreen, not the sexiest combination but there was something about it that made it smell good on her. What struck Johnny the most, the best thing of all, was that she has no idea how beautiful she really was. The look on her face was one of eagerness, not conceit.
“Wow, Jackie !” Johnny exclaimed. “You look really terrific.
Jackie blushed. Smiling, she replied, “Thanks, Johnny .”
Escorting her into the Rover, Johnny drove to his ranch, regaling her with his adventures with the horses all the way.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
After a short drive, Johnny turned the Rover into a gravel driveway. Both sides of the driveway were lined with pasture fence. Johnny passed the house, parking at the barn instead.
Johnny 's barn was a large, red building with white trim. Jackie could see everything was well maintained, even the flower beds surrounding the barn. Jackie spotted Irises, roses and petunias in the flower beds but no sign of weeds.
‘ This place is beautiful. Johnny obviously cares for it very much. ' Jackie thought.
Bounding out of the Rover, Johnny hurried around and opened the door for his pretty guest. “Welcome to my ranch, mi lady,” he said with a huge grin.
They were immediately approached by Bo , whom Johnny quickly introduced to Jackie . The cat turned on his charm and was soon following the duo as Johnny showed Jackie around.
Johnny's three horses stood in a coral at one side of the barn and greeted the humans, jockeying for position. Johnny reached out, stroking the necks of the two females. Star Bright stomped in protest and he was told, “Hang on old man, I'm getting to you!”
Jackie looked on for a moment then she, too, reached over and began giving the horses the desired attention.
“This girl is Poka. She's the mare I told you about. She's seven years old. She and this fella,” Johnny indicated Star Bright, “came as a pair. Star Bright is an 8 year old Appaloosa. He sired one colt that their previous owner said had great conformation. I'm intending to breed them when Poka comes in season next time. Let's go into the barn and bring the horses in. I'd like to work with the new filly for a little bit before we go riding.”
Johnny opened the large barn door and Jackie saw a large indoor area surrounded by stalls on both sides. She could see a storage room to the left of the door and a large, rolling barn door directly in front of them that was partially open, exposing a large gate that allowed the barn to be left open. To the right of the entry was a narrow staircase, leading up to a loft. Jackie could see bales of hay in the loft, ready to be tossed down as needed.
Johnny opened the storage room door. Jackie discovered that it was not only a storage room for the grain and other supplies Johnny had but also a tack room. Grabbing three halters off the wall, they headed toward the back. Johnny opened the gate and the three horses rushed in. He shut the gate and handed Jackie a halter.
“Poka should let you halter her.”
Jackie went over to Poka and, still stroking her, easily got the halter fastened. Johnny had done the same with Star Bright. He led the horse over to a wall area that Jackie now saw had rings to tie the horses up with. Johnny tied Star Bright up then returned to get the new filly. He indicated another ring to Jackie , about eight feet away from where Star Bright was now tethered.
“Would you go grab the container with the grooming supplies from the tack room, Jackie ?”
Jackie tied up Poka and then got the grooming supplies. Returning from the tack room, she got a currycomb and a brush out and began making friends with the mare while she groomed her.
Johnny began training the filly on the lead line. After a few minutes, he led the filly back out the gate and let her loose. He walked back through the gate, shutting it behind him. The filly followed, putting her head over the gate and showing her displeasure at being left out.
“I'm sorry sweetheart, you can't go with us this time,” Johnny told the filly.
Turning to Star Bright, Johnny joined in on the grooming session. Both horses were soon ready to be saddled.
Two hours after their arrival at the ranch, the two friends had the horses saddled and bridled. They led the horses out, mounted up and headed off up Johnny 's property line. Star Bright was carrying saddle bags containing a picnic lunch, and a first aid kit in addition to his rider. They rode along the fence line, alternating between walking and trotting, for about twenty minutes, then Johnny broke off, turning inward, following a trail that lead up a gentle hill. The horses, eager for a run, picked up their pace and broke into an easy lope at their riders signal. They loped for a few minutes then slowed to a lazy walk as they approached a small tree lined brook. The surrounding area was lush and very green. It had small wildflowers in little patches here and there. Johnny lifted the saddlebags off the saddle and untied the blanket he had fastened across the back of his saddle then let the reigns drop, ground tying the horse. Jackie followed suit and helped Johnny spread the blanket out on a flat area.
“I wouldn't ground tie Star Bright if there were any other horses nearby,” Johnny commented. Hearing his name, Star Bright came over and stuck his head over Johnny 's shoulder, giving him a nudge. He was rewarded by an affectionate rub on his neck. After a moment of attention, the big horse wandered off to graze with his companion.
Sitting down on the blanket, Johnny began removing the picnic items from the saddlebags. Handing Jackie a plate and silverware, he said, “I made a couple of egg salad and a couple roast beef sandwiches. We've also got carrots and celery sticks, apples, chips and lemonade to drink. For dessert we have some of Roy 's wife, Joanne 's, famous chocolate chip cookies.”
“Mm, it all looks delicious Johnny . I'm sure Poka and Star Bright will approve of the apples and carrots, too.”
Johnny laughed. “They sure will. If we give them a chance I guarantee they will approve of the cookies too. I'm not sure I want to give them a chance though. These cookies are too good to feed horses.”
They lingered over the picnic, talking about everything from their childhood to the latest medical procedures. Johnny told Jackie about his hopes of raising horses someday and what having this new filly meant towards his dream. He told her more about his ranch and the changes he had made since buying it.
“Would you like to ride home the long way and see more of the ranch?”
Jackie 's eyes flashed in pleasure and a big grin lit up her face. “I'd love to, Johnny . I can't remember the last time I enjoyed myself like this.”
Once again, Johnny was struck by what a beautiful woman she was; inside and out. He felt suddenly nervous, and wanted more than anything to not do anything stupid that would blow his chances with this amazing woman.
Johnny assisted her back onto Poka, although after seeing how well she rode, he realized his help was hardly necessary.
‘ Oh man…I can't believe she hasn't ridden in years. She rides like she was born in the saddle. '
They rode off, taking a round about way back to Johnny 's ranch. An hour later they rode back towards the barn. They were immediately greeted with a shrill whinny from the lonely filly. Arching her neck, she ran beside them as they rode along the fence line until they turned to go into the front of the barn. As they dismounted and entered the barn, she raced around the back and momentarily was hanging her head over the gate once again, nickering a greeting to her companions.
Johnny and Jackie removed the saddles and gave their horses a good grooming, then opened the gate and led them out, turning them loose beside the filly. The three horses ran, running a race towards what only they knew. They hadn't gone far before Star Bright had dropped to the ground and was joyfully rolling. The filly, desiring more attention, ran back towards the barn.
Jackie watched the filly, thinking about what Johnny had said about being able to name her. She said, “Wind, Johnny . She runs like the wind. You should name her something to do with that.”
“I like that idea! Hmm let me think. I know, what about ‘Tadewi?' That means wind in the Omaha dialect.”
“I like that, Johnny .”
Leaving the horses to their antics, Johnny escorted Jackie back through the barn and they approached his house. Apologetically, Johnny said, “Most of the work on this place has been in the barn. I've done a little on the house but not much.”
“I understand Johnny . Money only goes so far. I would have worked on the barn first myself.”
“I was lucky to get this place at all. It came available at an auction and I put in the low bid.”
“That sounds like a good way to get a place. Leaves you money to spend on fixing things up that you want.”
“Exactly…if I'd had to pay the full asking price I wouldn't have been able to fix up the barn…and I wouldn't have these horses.”
They entered the house through the kitchen door and he led her on a tour, then they went back out to the Rover and headed to dinner. Opting for a casual dinner after a day of riding, they were soon entering Johnny 's favorite pizza place. It was a small, quiet restaurant, dimly lit with red and white checked tablecloths. Each table had a candle; a faux fireplace and soft music added to the atmosphere. The host seated Johnny and Jackie at a booth near the back.
Looking over the menus, they chose a pizza, salads and soft drinks. After the waiter took their order they sat in companionable silence for a short while, then Johnny spoke softly, saying, “You made today a good day for me, Jackie . I hadn't realized it when we set the date, but today was my mom's birthday. She would have been 49 today.”
Jackie took his hand, not saying anything but reading in the fact that his mom had most likely died. She sensed that it wasn't the time to ask him about that, however. Instead she said, “Tell me about your mom, Johnny .”
“I remember one day I was six. I don't remember why, but I was mad at my parents. We had a tree outside of our house, actually a pretty big tree. I went and I climbed that tree, probably went 20 feet up. I sat in that tree for hours, with my back to the house. My mom later told me that it was so hard to watch me sitting in that tree, but she knew that I'd come down when I got hungry enough or tired enough. It was just after dark and I remember hearing a terrible scream. I had no idea what it was at the time, but now I know it was a screech owl. I've never climbed down a tree faster in my life. I ran in the house, up the stairs and into bed, clothes and all. I don't remember the details but mom said that I didn't come out until morning in spite of the fact I hadn't eaten since lunch.”
Jackie laughed softly as Johnny ended his tale. She could just see little six-year-old Johnny Gage racing into the house. “That is priceless, Johnny . It is a wonderful memory.”
The pizza came and their talk turned to lighter topics as they ate. Following dessert of ice cream sundaes, they slowly walked out to the Rover. It seemed like the most natural thing as Johnny slid his hand into Jackie 's while they walked. They hated to end the evening, but they both had to be at work the following day. Johnny drove Jackie back to the clinic. Parking in the back, he got out and they walked, hand-in-hand, to her apartment.
“Thank you for the wonderful day, Johnny .”
“It was fun, Jackie . Maybe we could do something again soon.”
“I'd like that. Call me?”
“I will. I'll try to call from the station tomorrow, if I don't you know we got busy.”
Leaning over, Johnny gave her a kiss on the cheek, then, squeezing her hand he walked off.
“Goodnight, Jackie .”
“'Night Johnny . Stay safe tomorrow. No more snakes, okay?”
Johnny broke into laughter. “No more snakes, believe me, no more snakes!”
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Later that night, Johnny was in the barn taking care of the many daily tasks necessary on the ranch. As he worked, he thought of his day with Jackie .
‘ She is absolutely amazing. Why was I worried about the idea of dating her? I can't believe I almost passed the chance of getting to know her because I knew she earned more than I do. Gage, that has to be one of your stupidest reasons yet for avoiding a girl. Oh, man but she sure isn't a girl! She's a remarkable, beautiful woman. Plus she seems to like me, too. Gosh, I didn't want to leave tonight. I sure hope tomorrow is slow so I can call her. '
Still thinking of the great day they'd had, Johnny finished up his chores and went to bed, hoping his dreams would be as good as his day had been.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Two weeks later, Johnny and Jackie finally managed to get together again. They had both been very busy. Johnny had been putting in overtime at the station and the clinic was short a doctor keeping Jackie working long hours. The call Johnny had hoped to make the next day had not panned out, but they had managed a few short calls in the last two weeks and Johnny had been to the clinic for his volunteer shift twice. Both the calls and his shifts had been tantalizingly short times with Jackie . Things had stayed much too busy to allow any real social time for either of them.
Jackie was once again waiting for him when Johnny came to pick her up. He immediately could tell that she was in a somber mood. He asked her, “What's wrong, Jackie ?”
“Not right now, Johnny . I'll talk to you about it after awhile. Let's go for a walk, please?”
Johnny studied her, trying to decide if he should ask anything further at the moment, then decided it best to proceed as she requested and he softly said, “Okay.” He was glad when she slipped her hand into his; he felt reassured nothing he'd done caused her serious mood.
They walked, silently along and entered a nearby park. It was after the dinner hour so the park was empty. They came to a small pond; during the daylight hours they would have been surrounded by ducks, but the ducks had gone to bed. Sitting on a bench beside the water, they sat looking at the stars beginning to come out.
Finally, Jackie spoke, giving Johnny her unexpected news.
“I had an offer today to take part in a three year program training doctors to run inner-city clinics and all of the many aspects that come with working with ethnic groups as well as women and children. I heard about the program when I was still in Wyoming and I applied to it just after I came here. My boss is over the moon with the idea of my going. Unfortunately…the program is based in Washington , D.C. ”
Stunned, Johnny didn't know what to say. He felt many emotions swirling over him in the space of a few short seconds. He saw the tears in Jackie 's eyes and realized for the first time that he was indeed becoming as important to her as she was to him. He gently wiped the tears away with his thumbs, and then finally said, “You can't pass up this opportunity, Jackie . I'll miss you but I'll be willing to write if you will. Sometimes we could even call each other. Three years will pass before we know it.”
Smiling through her tears, Jackie put her arms around Johnny , giving him a hug.
“ Johnny Gage you are a very special man. Yes, I'll definitely be glad to correspond with you. Everything I learn about you makes me want to learn more.”
Dreading the answer, he asked, “How soon do you leave?”
“In two weeks. They'll pay for a plane ticket. I have lots of things that need to be arranged first. I hope we can spend a couple days together before then.”
“I'll make the time, Jackie . Believe me, I'll make the time.”
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Later that night, Johnny was in bed, listening to Bo 's purr and thinking about Jackie . He'd become more and more depressed as he contemplated Jackie 's departure.
‘Why does she have to go away? Why is it that when I finally meet someone I'm crazy about, who seems to like me, someone who might even be....marriage potential....oh lord, did I just think 'marriage'? Man, I *really* like her. What am I gonna do while she's gone? How am I gonna wait three years?'
“She's worth it, Bo . I've never felt like this before.” The cat nudged his hand, propelling it down his lanky body and blinked at Johnny . “I bet you'll be willing to help me write letters, won't you, Bo ?” Purring louder, Bo licked Johnny 's hand. Johnny continued absently petting the cat while he daydreamed about Jackie . It wasn't long before he'd fallen asleep with the cat curled by his side.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Nearly two weeks later, Johnny exited the Rover and walked up to Jackie 's apartment. He was dressed in a dark blue suit and tie and his hair was neatly trimmed and combed into place. He carried a single red rose. He approached her door and knocked.
Jackie opened her door and once again Johnny found himself completely stunned. Jackie was dressed in a forest green dress that had tiny pink flowers all over it. The dress had a scooped neck and emphasized her small waist; the skirt flowed, coming down to just above her knees. She wore a simple silver chain at her throat and small, pearl drop earrings. Her hair was swept up into a french knot, giving her an elegant look. Her smile lit up her face as she gazed at Johnny .
Johnny handed Jackie the rose. He said, “You are as beautiful, no, more beautiful, than this rose, Jackie .”
Jackie blushed, clearly pleased at his words. Looking him over, she remarked, “You polish up pretty well yourself.”
Giving her his arm, Johnny escorted Jackie out and helped her into the Rover then hurried around and hopped in. They drove off, heading to a elegant restaurant that Johnny had found. Driving up, Johnny pulled in front, and then quickly went around to help Jackie out. A valet took the Rover and parked it. As they approached the restaurant, a doorman opened the door and they were greeted by the maitre'd. Johnny gave his name and the man took them back to a small corner booth. The waiter brought them water and asked if they would like to order a bottle of wine. They chose a chardonnay, along with shrimp cocktails. Johnny ordered the New York steak and Jackie ordered a small steak with crab legs.
After their wine had come, Johnny asked the question that he really didn't want to hear the answer to. “Do you know where you will be living yet?”
“They've arranged housing for me not too far from the university. I'll be taking classes 4 hours a day, 3 days a week, plus I'll be working in the university clinic as well as the actual hospital.” Jackie took a drink of her wine.
“It sounds wonderful. The plans you've told me about sound like they'll really help you back here.”
“I know, I think so too. I'm just sorry it means I have to leave for three years.”
Johnny looked down briefly, the ache of losing her so soon already soaking in, then looked back up in earnest, his expression one of almost a desperation born of not wanting them to forget each other. “Me too, but we'll both be busy. I'm sure the time will fly by quickly.”
“I guess you're right. I suppose it will be easier when I'm actually there started with the classes and the job.”
The waiter served their shrimp cocktails and salads, and then they continued their conversation.
“I'm sorry I didn't have time to have you over for dinner, Johnny . I love to cook but it's hard sometimes because my apartment is too small to cook a really good meal.”
“That would have been good. I think you already know how much I love to eat.”
Jackie laughed. “Yes, I've noticed, Johnny . I honestly don't know where you put it though. You must have hollow legs!”
Their dinner was served and they ate slowly, enjoying the good food. Neither one of them wanted the evening to end. Prolonging it a bit, Johnny ordered dessert and coffee for both of them. They lingered, content to sit silently, sipping their coffee.
Before they knew it, they were back at Jackie 's door; Johnny took her in his arms, holding her close for a moment. Shortly he pulled himself away, still holding her hand, he said, “I guess I'll see you in the morning, Jackie .”
“I'll be ready, Johnny . I'm glad you're taking me to the airport.”
“Me too, Jackie .”
Jackie reached up and caressed Johnny 's check.
‘ Guess it's now or never. ' Johnny thought.
“May I kiss you goodnight, Jackie ?” Johnny asked hopefully.
Touched by the thoughtfulness of the man before her, Jackie smiled. “I'd like that, Johnny .”
Johnny leaned down and kissed her, softly at first, then the intensity grew. After a moment, Johnny pulled back, leaving them both breathless. The memory of this kiss was now going to make it even more difficult to say good-bye.
“'Night Jackie .”
“Thanks, Johnny . Goodnight.”
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Johnny and Jackie stood near the gate, delaying her boarding the plane until the last possible moment. Before they knew it, the final boarding call was made.
“You promise to write me, Johnny ?”
“I will, Jackie . I'm looking forward to your letters, to hearing all about things in D.C.”
“And I'll want to hear about the clinic. Guess I'd better go get on.”
Johnny put his arms around her and gave her a soft and gentle kiss. Pulling back, he stroked her face, wiping the tears from her eyes away. “Take care of yourself, Jackie .”
Jackie took her bag back from Johnny then turned, giving her ticket to the gate agent. “Bye Johnny . Be careful at work, please.”
Johnny smiled, and nodded, waving to her as she walked out the door to get on the plane. He slowly left the inside of the airport, going over to a good spot to watch the plane depart.
‘ Man, she's not even gone yet, and I miss her already.' He sighed. ‘Three years. Well, she'll be worth waiting for as long as I have to. '
Watching the plane take off, Johnny decided to head home and get started on his first letter to her. “I'm going to make sure she has at least one letter a week,” he muttered to himself determinedly. Smiling, thinking of the things he wanted to say, Johnny hurried out of the airport, whistling a happy tune under his breath.
